Hadestown is a modern retelling of the Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice by singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell.

Orpheus and Eurydice fall in love, but somehow, Eurydice ends up in the underworld, ruled by Hades. Orpheus descends to hell to get her back, charms Hades and Persephone with his music, and is allowed to take his love out of the underworld. Yet, there is one catch: Eurydice must follow Orpheus; he may not look back, and if he does, he will lose her forever. Hermes and the Fates help narrate this beautiful and heartbreaking story.
